Sen. Mitch McConnell(R-KY) broke his silence about the medical issues he is facing on Sunday in a statement that stunned onlookers.
McConnell has been hospitalized for about a month, and his office has not provided any indications about the senator’s condition. The lack of transparency from McConnellsparked scrutiny from both Democrats and Republicans, who called on him to share information with the American public as soon as possible.
McConnell released a photo of himself sitting upright in his hospital bed, dressed in a red plaid shirt and holding a newspaper next to his wife, former transportation secretary Elaine Chao, reported Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News. The photo was also accompanied by a statement.
“Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges. They haven’t exactly gotten easier to manage with age. And last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital,” the statement reads in part.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia,” it added.
Critics reacted to McConnell’s photo and statement on social media, with some noting the curious timing of its release considering that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) died of a cardiac event a few hours earlier.
“Fantastic! He’s awake, now can someone have him resign?” Desiree Townsend, an independent journalist, told her 56,500 followers on X.
“No mention of Lindsey Graham’s death. Totally normal. Nothing to see here,” Franklin Leonard, founder of The Black List, told his more than 179,000 X followers.
“Maybe he was just waiting for Lindsey to die first? It happens,” Jese Hawken, host and producer of the “Junk Filter” podcast, posted to his more than 25,000 followers on Bluesky.
