Critics of President Donald Trump were astounded by his latest move to sway the 2026 midterm elections.
On Thursday, reports indicated that Trump fired the three remaining members of the Federal Election Commission, an independent agency that is responsible for overseeing campaign finance laws. The move occurred after the Supreme Court ruled that the president has the power to remove officers of certain independent agencies. It also happened just about 100 days away from the midterm election.
The move sparked a firestorm of criticism online.
“Absolute total chaos. Thanks SCOTUS,” Jim Stewartson, a political writer, wrote to his more than 150,000 followers on X.
“Trump just formally admitted that they can’t win the election. In announcing the reality that they are fucked, he went ahead and fired all remaining commissioners on the federal election commission. THIS IS A BIG F—— DEAL!!!” Fred Guttenberg, a political activist with more than 463,000 followers on X, posted on social media.
“Here we go…” posted Mike Madrid, a GOP political consultant with more than 148,000 followers on X.
“Donald Trump isn’t going to get his voter suppression bill passed, so he’s undermining the integrity of our elections by gutting the independent agency that oversees them,” Melanie D’Arrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, who has more than 89,000 followers on X, posted on Thursday.
