While tall ships from all over the world bobbed along the Hudson River to mark the nation’s big birthday weekend and visitors thronged the city for fireworks and World Cup matches, the pop star Taylor Swift celebrated her wedding to Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs star tight end, in a multiday, logistically complex affair at Madison Square Garden.
On Thursday and Friday, hundreds of fans gathered outside the Garden, undeterred by the scorching heat, to revel in what many Americans considered something akin to a royal wedding.
What little is known about the goings-on inside the cavernous Garden was based on official communications and eagle-eyed observations of the cargo that trucks loaded into the venue in the days prior.
In the end, the Swift-Kelce wedding proved to be a spectacle like no other, in that the spectators saw very little; fans would not get so much as a glimpse of the newly wedded stars.
