Pet owners canceling plans to stay home with their pups on July 4th as runaway cases surge

While the nation prepares to celebrate its semiquincentennial this July 4th, some Americans are choosing to hunker down with their pups rather than party on in the name of patriotism.

According to Life360’s Runaway Report, over half of pet parents are opting to spend the 4th of July at home to quell their dog’s firework fears, prioritize their comfort, and reduce the likelihood of a runaway incident.

“Remaining calm in the face of a potentially stressful event is top priority,” veterinarian Dr. Molly Miosek of Sandy Paws Veterinary Clinic in Montauk, NY, told The Post.

The same poll found that Independence Day celebrations spike stress in over 75% of dogs, and 50% of pet parents report heightened anxiety of their own.

These fears are founded, as over one in five dogs (22%) have bolted or attempted to escape their homes due to stress on the Fourth of July, and experts suggest only 14% of these fugitive fur babies will make it back home.

Disconcerting as those risks are, according to Miosek, “fear travels down the leash,” making it critical for owners to project calm leadership, especially during a triggering event.

To minimize anxiety and decrease the likelihood of a runaway dog, experts say preparation should begin far in advance of the 4th.

“An owner’s ability to help their dog work through fear comes down to the relationship they’ve built long before a stressful event,” Bethany Wilson, Program Director and Master Trainer at Hermosa Beach’s Puppy Academy, told The Post.

“Those skills need to be practiced in everyday situations, so your dog already knows how to look to you for guidance when something frightening happens.”

Wilson shared that gradual exposure, such as practicing a familiar training routine while playing a recording of fireworks and slowly increasing the volume, can help prepare pets for a future onslaught of sound.

Support products like a compression vest, CBD products or calming supplements are excellent options for dogs with mild to moderate anxiety. However, these items need to be introduced ahead of the holiday so that dogs can associate them with positive stimuli.

Wilson recommends putting a compression vest on your pup every day and pairing it with a soothing activity, such as snuggling.

For dogs with more severe anxiety, additional measures should be taken.

“The anxiety state is a full-body horrible experience and should be avoided,” said Miosek, adding that stress wreaks havoc on the immune system and leaves a lasting impression.

“Once anxiety is experienced, most pets will have solid memories of the fear and physiologic response.”

Underscoring the deep toll anxiety can take on our canine brethren, both experts support the emerging trend of staying home with highly anxious pets during intense sensory events like the 4th.

“Pets with anxiety should be with at least one family member during fireworks, thunderstorms, and other weather events,” said Miosek.

Both experts recommend that pet owners keep dogs in whichever part of the home they are most comfortable.

If and when your dog begins to exhibit signs of distress, including pacing, barking, whining, or seeking a place to hide, Wilson recommends redirecting their attention away from the noise by asking for a known behavior or by engaging in a treat-motivated scavenger game.

Wilson emphasized that stress does not always cease when the fireworks fade, making aftercare a critical part of the panic plan.

“Once the trigger has passed and you’re left with a fearful dog, gentle massage can be incredibly calming.”

For many pet parents, 4th of July fears extend beyond the cacophony of fireworks to the possibility of a runaway situation.

According to The Runaway Report, 35% of parents admit they would go into a full panic if their dog escaped during fireworks, and only 37% reported feeling confident they could effectively recall their dog if they made a break for it.

For hounds who are especially prone to panic, Wilson suggests keeping them on a leash indoors to minimize the risk of them taking off.

“Stay home. Keep them on a leash indoors, make sure they’re wearing a collar with ID tags, have them microchipped, and consider using a GPS tracker like the Life360 Pet GPS.“

In terms of large-scale prevention, Miosek advocates for policy changes that would benefit more than just four-legged animals.

“I live in Montauk, NY, where fireworks are basically all summer long. I would love to see a change in this ‘booming industry,’” she said
