Prepare for a hot, crowded Fourth of July travel surge

Between family vacations, heat waves, World Cup games and America 250 events, it’s shaping up to be a scorching and hectic holiday weekend of travel.

The bulk of the nation’s travelers are expected to go by car, with AAA projecting more than 61.4 million Americans to embark on road trips between June 27 and July 5.

For those heading to the airport today, godspeed. The Transportation Security Administration is expecting to screen more than 3 million travelers at its checkpoints, its highest passenger volume of the holiday travel period.

The good news: TSA says checkpoints are fully staffed.

Travelers with TSA PreCheck can bypass any long lines by enrolling in the agency’s expanding biometric program, TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, which is now available in 65 airports. It’s not available at every airport and can be used only with participating airlines, but when it does work, it can get you through security in seconds.
