Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-MO) interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Wednesday night left some observers taken aback.
Hawley joined Ingraham ahead of President Donald Trump’s “Freedom 250” rally, where the two discussed immigration policy and a host of other issues. At one point, Hawley attempted to make a populist argument about liberals being disconnected from the problems of immigration, one that didn’t land with some observers.
“Liberals like him sit back in their gated communities, issue these rulings, and then go off and sip martinis at their private pools,” Hawley said, criticizing a recent ruling from a judge that prevents immigration agents from arresting immigrants at courthouses.
Hawley, who holds degrees from elite universities such as Stanford and Yale, was swiftly mocked online for his comments.
“Wow,” Camille Mackenzie, a conservative political commentator, posted on X. “Could someone please play this back for Laura later? How does this not perfectly explain what is currently going on in the US with the first admin to be packed to the gills with billionaires? Hawley just agrees like a good little simp. These people are gross and out of touch. They’re as mental as Trump is.”
“The lack of self-awareness in this exchange is incredible,” journalist Aaron Rupar posted on X.
“Josh Hawley, common man of the People, (Stanford, Yale, US Senate) literally running from the consequences of his actions,” Phillip Anderson, a communications expert, posted on Bluesky above a photo of Hawley running out of the Capitol during the attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
“Replace every ‘socialist’ with ‘capitalist’ in this exchange, and it becomes a commentary on modern American society,” Julian Andreone, Capitol Hill reporter for Drop Site News, posted on X.
