Political analysts criticized President Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair after FBI Director Kash Patel’s girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, was announced as a featured performer at the June 24 kick-off rally.
Wilkins announced via X she would perform at the event.
Political reporter Sara Higdon questioned whether paying Patel’s girlfriend with taxpayer funds to perform at the quick off rally violated federal ethics laws. Wilkins defended herself, arguing she’s been a successful country music artist for years and denying she’ll receive monetary compensation for her performance.
“I’m no longer accepting false narratives and total sham accusations that diminish my hard work and earned accomplishments, so please expect this kind of response to continue,” Wilkins added.
Reactions from journalists and political commentators followed.
Independent journalist Aidan Thompson challenged Wilkins’ claim on X, “You don’t even have 6k monthly listeners. What ‘successful career’?”
The Bulwark senior reporter Will Sommer wrote on X, “Kash Patel’s country-singer girlfriend will be performing on the National Mall,” and noted, “Apparently at the concert that Martina McBride and Milli Vanilli dropped out of,” he said.
Left-wing podcaster Matthew Sitman mocked the booking on X, “I had my fingers crossed she’d step in!”
“It’s a July 4 miracle.”
