24-year-old’s park rampage in SUV ends in cuffs after citywide chase

“Justice” wasn’t on his side.

A 24-year-old man named Justice Ray was arrested after allegedly plowing a vehicle through Dolores Park, sparking a reckless driving complaint and setting off a rolling police pursuit that wound across San Francisco before ending in his arrest, authorities said.

The trouble began Saturday at about 8 p.m., when a witness walked into Mission Station to report a vehicle that had driven straight through Dolores Park earlier in the day.

The car was allegedly seen tearing across grassy areas inside the park while people were present before speeding off in an unknown direction.

By Monday afternoon, officers say they had their target back in sight.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., San Francisco Police officers assigned to Tenderloin Station spotted the suspect vehicle traveling at high speed southbound on Van Ness Avenue near McAllister Street.

When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused to yield and continued driving with what police described as a willful and wanton disregard for public safety, briefly slipping away.

But the run didn’t last long.

Minutes later, officers found the same occupied vehicle parked at Turk and Larkin streets and moved in again. Once more, the driver allegedly ignored commands and took off, continuing until finally stopping at Post and Webster streets.

This time, the situation came to an end.

The driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident. Two passengers detained during the investigation were later released.

The arrest sparked online reaction, including one Reddit user who wrote: “I would like to apologize to the SFPD by claiming that they would do nothing about the car who drove through Mission Dolores park. The SFPD did in fact arrest that driver. Thank you, SFPD.”

Another added: “Of course they were speeding down Van Ness in the bus lane, where the true a**h**** drivers feel most entitled.”

Ray was hauled off to the San Francisco County Jail and booked on a slew of charges, including reckless driving, resisting arrest, illegally driving in a bus-only lane and getting behind the wheel without a valid license.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Francisco Police Department at 1-415-575-4444.
