Severe Weather Expected in the Northeast on Monday

After a pleasant weekend, the weather in the Northeast was expected to turn wet and stormy on Monday into Tuesday, with a chance for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain across a broad area that includes Philadelphia, New York and Washington.

While meteorologists on Sunday morning were still pinning down the details, they warned that the weather could have widespread impact, with power outages possible and instances of flooding on small streams and in urban areas with poor drainage.

“A lot of the areas in the Northeast have the potential to get rain and some of it could be heavy,” said Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center.

The threat of hazardous weather is likely to arrive in the midafternoon on Monday, and continue into Tuesday, as a low pressure system over the lower Great Lakes region pushes eastward.

A few scattered showers could arrive Sunday ahead of the storm.

The Weather Prediction Center said there was at least a 15 percent chance of rain that could lead to flooding on Monday for the broad area encompassing Washington, Philadelphia and New York City.

Rainfall totals through Tuesday could reach more than two inches.

Boston was expected to get rain on Monday, but was likely to stay outside the core of the heaviest rainfall.

The storm will also bring a low risk for severe thunderstorms across a large portion of the East Coast from Atlanta to New York City, with a slightly higher threat in the area encompassing Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Va., and Charlotte, N.C.

The scattered storms could deliver damaging winds, along with isolated large hail and scattered heavy downpours and a very low chance for tornadoes.

Washington falls within the area at a higher risk for severe thunderstorms. The National Weather Office in Sterling, Va., said that the details and timing of the severe weather remained unclear.

New York City fell outside the area with a slightly higher threat of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds, but this forecast could change if the storm takes a more northerly track.

“If the system trends more north, it could be more of a severe weather threat, with thunderstorms bringing severe damaging winds,” said Matt Wunsch, a meteorologist with the Weather Service office in Upton, N.Y. “If it trends more south, it could be more of a heavy rain event.”

Both outcomes are equally possible, Mr. Wunsch said.
