Legal experts skewer Trump DOJ as its effort to bury evidence of misconduct backfires

Judge has ample evidence to order a contempt trial for Todd Blanche: legal expert

Legal experts pounded the Department of Justice as it faces a possible probe into its failed effort to bury evidence of misconduct.

Adam Klasfeld, editor-in-chief of All Rise News, and Glenn Kirschner, a former federal prosecutor, weighed in on a court filing demanding a special counsel probe into DOJ’s botched prosecution of the Broadview Six, a group of protesters arrested for demonstrating outside an immigration detention facility near Chicago.

A federal judge tossed the case after she found evidence of prosecutorial misconduct in the complete grand jury transcripts, which the DOJ attorneys had tried to withhold.

Klasfeld explained that since then, the DOJ has been “trying to pin this all on Sheri Mecklenburg, the lead prosecutor,” by framing her as “just one rogue prosecutor.”

The attorneys for the Broadview Six filed a request for the federal judge to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The misconduct in this case “runs much deeper” and likely goes all the way “to the highest level of the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office and likely to the Department of Justice in Washington D.C.,” Klasfeld said.

“To not appoint a special prosecutor here would enable the government strategy to lay all that has happened on a scapegoat, a convenient outcome to those who wish to turn the page,” Klasfeld said. “These transcripts were hidden from the judge.”

Klasfeld repeated, “The Trump Justice Department wants to lay all of the misconduct on the single prosecutor,” and blasted the “claim that no one involved in the Justice Department, no one involved in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, withheld these transcripts engaged in this cover-up.”

Kirschner described the DOJ’s behavior in the grand jury, in which prosecutors tried to pressure grand jurors into indicting the Broadview Six.

“It’s so beyond the pale,” Kirschner said, slamming the idea that “the Department of Justice can send dirty lawyers into a courtroom and lie and deceive and misdirect and conceal things from a judge.”
