Kamala Harris briefly reemerges from political wilderness at notorious LA gay bar The Abbey

Kamala Harris made a rare public appearance Saturday night, surprising patrons at a famed West Hollywood LGBTQ hotspot as she continues to keep a relatively low political profile.

The former vice president and her husband, Doug Emhoff, stopped by The Abbey, where they were greeted by cheers and a crowd eager to snap photos with the former vice president.

The visit caught many guests off guard after an announcement was made around 6:30 p.m. that Harris and Emhoff were inside the packed venue.

Videos shared online showed patrons applauding and reaching out to shake Harris’ hand as she walked through the restaurant. At one point, she could be heard wishing the crowd a cheerful “Happy Pride!”

The appearance marked one of Harris’ most visible outings in recent months as speculation continues over her political future following her defeat in the 2024 presidential election.

Staff at the venue reportedly received little advance notice that the high-profile couple would be stopping by, with employees learning of the visit shortly before their shifts began.

The Abbey has long been one of Southern California’s best-known LGBTQ destinations.

Founded in 1991 as a modest coffee house, the establishment has since grown into a sprawling bar, restaurant and nightclub that regularly draws celebrities, politicians and tourists alike.

But it has drawn increased scrutiny in recent years after reports of a swathe of drink spiking cases came to light, KTLA reports.

Harris has been a longtime supporter of LGBTQ rights and has frequently appeared at Pride celebrations throughout her political career, including during her years as a California senator, vice president and presidential candidate.

Saturday’s outing came as Pride Month festivities were taking place across Los Angeles and the nation, drawing thousands of revelers to parades, festivals and community events celebrating LGBTQ culture and activism.

While Harris has largely stayed out of the political spotlight in recent months, her surprise appearance at the iconic West Hollywood venue quickly generated buzz online — and gave patrons an unexpected brush with one of the Democratic Party’s biggest names.
