Midwestern hub home to Target and Best Buy ranks as the most in-demand city for renters: study

The home of the iconic Mall of America leads the nation when it comes to desirability among renters.

Minneapolis — home to UnitedHealth, Target and Best Buy — landed in the No. 1 most sought-after city by renters, according to RentCafe’s first-quarter study of the top 150 cities tracked by renter engagement.

The City of Lakes’ saved searches ticked up 35% and favorites increased 10% year-over-year, RentCafe said in commentary on the study analyzing search data.

“This city’s appeal lies in its strong job market anchored by major employers in healthcare, finance and tech … combined with the Upper Harbor Redevelopment project, which is drawing in more renters,” RentCafe said in commentary.

The Upper Harbor Redevelopment is a $350 million, 48-acre mixed-use project along the Mississippi River in North Minneapolis.

In addition to the strong job market, RentCafe’s research analyst and author of the report, Adina Dragos, cited the city’s cost of living that is 8% below the national average as reasons for Minneapolis’ popularityy.

“Meanwhile, as apartment availability dropped by 6%, renters were incentivized to save listings and lock in options before they disappear, which helped push the city up in the ranking,” Dragos said. Saved searches in the city jumped by 35% year-over-year.

Most renter engagement for Minneapolis listings came from Chicago, as well as Dallas and Philadelphia, the study found.

Minneapolis climbed two spots from the prior quarter to get to No. 1. It is followed by Atlanta, which maintained its ranking quarter-over-quarter. Coming in third is Miami, which soared 24 positions to nail the coveted spot.

The last time Minneapolis came in at No. 1 was in January 2025.

The Bronx — just a borough of the city of New York — made the list, nabbing the No. 6 spot after ascending 34 places from the previous quarter.

New York City’s northernmost borough emerged in the top 10 for the first time due to “growing interest and limited availability,” per the commentary, noting an 110% jump in saved listings.

Renter interest in the Bronx was primarily driven by prospects from New York City and Boston.

Looking to remain in or move to New York City, The Bronx drew “renters who want New York City access without paying a premium.”

The Bronx is the only place in the Northeast region to make the top 10.

The West led all regions, with 11 cities in the top 30 and five newcomers from the region. The South followed with nine of the top 30 markets. The Midwest notched seven and the Northeast rounded out the ranking with three.
