The NYPD commissioner revealed Monday that there has been little movement on Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s key initiative of removing cops from mental health calls.
“Those conversations have not yet commenced,” said the city’s top cop, Jessica Tisch, when asked during a City Council hearing if the NYPD has discussed any policy changes with the Office of Community Safety.
“Nothing is planned at this time to be shifted,” Tisch said of police funding or staffing when pressed by Council Speaker Julie Menin about NYPD cuts to cover the new office.

Hizzoner announced the massively scaled-down initiative — a mayoral office with just two staffers — earlier this year after vowing to revamp the city’s mental health response system during his mayoral campaign.
Mamdani promised to create a brand new agency that would work around the clock to replace cops on mental health calls and fund the agency with cuts to the NYPD’s overtime budget.
