Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s visit to meet with jailed Jeffrey Epstein accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, which led to her getting moved to a minimum-security prison last year afterwards, became a flashpoint with Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) at a Senate hearing on Tuesday.
With Blanche professing that he was unaware that the convicted sex trafficker now has a private room and access to such amenities as “puppy therapy,” Reed wasn’t buying it and went on an extensive attack, accusing the former Donald Trump personal lawyer of a cover-up.
Over Blanche’s protestations, Reed told him, “This is a person of extra special interest to the president of the United States — he’s known her. Why did he send you down to talk to her?”
“He didn’t send me,” the Trump appointee interrupted. “I went. What do you mean? You think President Trump called and asked me to go interview a witness in federal prison? Honestly?”
“Yes, I do, frankly,” the Rhode Island Democrat replied without hesitation.
“Because, you know why?” he continued as the acting AG tried to talk over him. “Because the deal was in. He needed somebody he could rely — he needed somebody he could rely upon to talk to her and say, ‘What would she say if she was asked about Jeffrey Epstein?’ And you were the perfect choice.”
“And you went down there and suddenly — shazzam — she’s out of a more confining situation into a much more relaxed federal prison,” he accused.
“Every word that I asked her is recorded and available to you to review,” Blanche replied. “If there is criticisms of the questions that I asked her, go ahead and make them. The president did not have anything to do with my decision to go interview Ms. Maxwell. If I wouldn’t have went and a career [prosecutor] went, you would have said, ‘Why didn’t you go yourself?’ Just like you expect me to know that she has access to her own shower—.”
“You should,” Reed said as he cut him off. “Everyone in the United States who reads the newspapers knows that. I guess you don’t, you know, read things like that.”
“You know, this whole hearing is exposing something that I think is very frightening,” the senator continued. “You’re a very gifted lawyer, but from my perspective, you have very little faith to the Constitution and the people of America, and you’re the president’s consigliere.”
“Your perspective is completely wrong, senator,” Blanche replied, to which Reed shot back, “I think the facts will prove me right.”
