Khloé Kardashian has been on reality television for nearly half of her life, something even she finds unusual.
“It’s crazy to think of, when you position it that way,” she said. “I don’t think of that like that.”
In 2007, when filming began on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” the E! reality show that followed the antics of her now-famous blended family, Kardashian was only 22. Over 20 seasons (the name changed to “The Kardashians” when the show moved to Hulu), viewers have watched as Kardashian worked through conflicts with her siblings; pulled countless pranks on her mother, Kris Jenner; helped start several businesses, including Good American (fashion) and Khloud (popcorn); and welcomed her two children True and Tatum.
How do Kardashian and her family stay natural when cameras are always following them? She credits her father, Robert Kardashian, and his longtime hobby of making home videos. Her father, who died in 2003, was a prominent lawyer and no stranger to media exposure.
“I have hundreds of VHS tapes of my dad filming us,” she said. “I know that’s a silly way to position it, but it always reminds me of that. We had some experience prior to our show.”
Kardashian has been exploring a new form of media with her podcast “Khloé in Wonder Land,” where she interviews wellness experts, psychics and, of course, her family.
“I did love getting drunk with Kylie [Jenner], just because that was fun, and she was my premiere episode,” she said. “I’m having a lot of fun this season, and I’m probably getting more comfortable being an interviewer as well.”
During a call from her house in Los Angeles, Kardashian discussed the beauty of motherhood, her workout routine and what snacks she likes to keep on hand. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
Children
Honestly, I love motherhood. It’s the best, most rewarding job in the world. And it is going be hard, but I think anything hard is worth having. I love the innocence of children. I love trying to preserve that innocence as much as possible. Also, maybe things that I wish happened differently when I was growing up or whatever, you get to do that for your kids.
Family
I just can’t breathe without them, as obnoxious as it sounds. Some people live in other states, I just don’t know how anyone can do that. We live in the same gated neighborhood together. There’s just not a chance I could ever be away from them.
Prayer
I start my day off with gratitude and prayer, and I really feel like it centers me and starts my day from that mind-set. My prayer is really just thanking God for the day and a prayer of protection. My dad was very, very spiritual — I remember a visual of him always sitting in this one chair reading his Bible. Seeing that all the time, it sort of instilled something in me.
Bed
You’re going to think I’m nuts, but that’s OK — I have a custom-sized bed because I like my kids to sleep in there, and I had a lot of slumber parties with the cousins. I have a remote and it lifts the bed. It’s not like a hospital bed, it’s still super chic and fabulous, but it has those capabilities.
Workouts
I do cardio interval and weight training, and I love it. Working out for me is just mental. I need the release, I have to move my body, and what it does for me emotionally is so powerful. I’ve never once said, “Oh, I really regretted spending that hour in the gym today.”
Music
I play music from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. In the mornings I normally start off with maybe Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. Midday I might change it to more Sabrina Carpenter or Justin Bieber vibes. And then at night it’s normally like John Coltrane and more jazzy-type stuff to settle down the house. I’m big on a soundtrack to my life.
Getting Glam
I get my glam done quite frequently because I have so many things going on, and I love it. I’m good at doing my own makeup. I’m not good at my own hair, so it’s always nice to have someone guide you through and help you out.
Hydration
I got the HydroJug water bottle in a P.R. kit. I’m so not this person to walk around with a water bottle. Like, that’s so ridiculous. I took it to Korea, and Kim [Kardashian] was like, “You are not doing this.” But it’s the only way I drink. It makes me accountable.
Snacks
I would way rather graze throughout the day than sit for a big meal. I love saltine crackers, I know that’s super basic. I love pretzels. I love anything with cheese. I’m not the best eater.
Barefoot Dreams Blankets
They just make me feel comforted and cozy.
