Legendary Lakers family matriarch makes max payout in LA mayoral race

As several of the Los Angeles mayoral candidates engage in the second debate on Tuesday night, a local sports magnate has donated the maximum amount to her chosen candidate.

Jeanie Buss — the former Los Angeles Lakers owner who sold a majority stake in the team for a record $10 billion last June — has donated the maximum amount — $1,800 — to Spencer Pratt.

The donation was uncovered by X user @UnrigLA, revealing part of a Contribution Report from Pratt’s campaign that showed Buss’ contribution highlighted.

The news comes just days after it was reported that the former reality star from Laguna Beach and The Hills and crystal shop proprietor is making huge strides with fundraising.

A report from last week revealed that he had even out-raised current LA mayor Karen Bass, pulling in nearly $540,000 since January.

That sum barely put him ahead of another rival, Nithya Raman, who raised $530,000 in the first three months of 2026, and Bass, whose fundraising efforts totaled $495,000.

However, Bass does have a $2.3 million war chest from previous contributions over the past two years, which far out-paces her competitors.

Still, there is not as of yet a clear-cut choice in the mayoral race, with polling suggesting that no candidate will earn more than 50% of the vote to avoid a November run-off election.

The incumbent Bass is currently at 25%, followed by Raman (17%) and Pratt (14%), though another poll put Pratt in second place with 11%.

Pratt has primarily ran his campaign railing against Bass, whose failure in leadership he blames for the loss of his home and many others in the Pacific Palisades fire in 2024.

He has also blasted Bass’ plan to overhaul MacArthur Park, and the mayor’s massive $14.85 billion operating budget.

Buss is far from the first prominent figure to support Pratt, with others such as podcaster Joe Rogan, actor Adam Carolla, reality star Nick Viall and Senator Rick Scott endorsing him.

The $10 billion deal Buss secured for the Lakers is the largest valuation for any pro sports franchise, bringing an end to her family’s 50-year control of the team.

The Buss family will retain a 15% stake in the team, with Buss remaining on board as the team’s governor and run the day-to-day operations of the team for several more years.
