Laura Linney, a five-time Tony nominee, will return to Broadway next spring in David Hare’s new play, “Montauk.”
In the play, about a relationship between two artists, Linney will portray a writer who becomes entangled with a painter in Manhattan and on Long Island. The role of the painter has not yet been cast.
Directed by Daniel Sullivan, “Montauk” will be presented at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater by Manhattan Theater Club, one of the four nonprofits with Broadway houses. The organization, in announcing the production, also said that it had named Linney its first artist-in-residence, and that in that role she will develop future productions for the company and will assist with its outreach programs.
Linney is a prolific actress onscreen as well as onstage. She has been nominated three times for Academy Awards, for the films “You Can Count on Me,” “Kinsey” and ”The Savages.” She was most recently on Broadway in a 2023 MTC production of “Summer, 1976.” Hare is best known for the plays “Plenty” and “Skylight” and the films “The Hours” and “The Reader.”
Last year, the commercial producer Scott Rudin had said he was intending to produce “Montauk,” but he said this week that he has since opted not to pursue the project because of “creative differences as to the direction of the script.”
