Some Republican lawmakers are plotting rebellion against Trump over Iran: ‘Shift in unity’

GOP setting ‘dangerous precedent’ with off-limits move — and it may backfire: House Dems

Unity within the Republican Party is set to shatter as an Iran rebellion is in the cards, numerous sources have claimed.

Party insiders believe an upcoming vote on the War Powers Resolution could splinter the GOP. The War Powers Resolution empowers Congress to check the president’s war-making authority by requiring the president to report any military action to Congress within 48 hours. It also mandates that lawmakers approve any troop deployments lasting longer than 60 days.

President Donald Trump’s war with Iran is closing in on the 60-day deadline, and support for its continuation from the Republican Party is not yet confirmed. Insiders speaking to CNN believe this will fracture the party.

Columnist Zachary B. Wolf wrote, “GOP leaders have — so far — been mostly successful in keeping their party together and preventing defections on Iran war powers votes, which Democrats continue to force in the Senate and House. But multiple GOP sources have acknowledged to CNN that the 60-day mark could mark a shift in that unity.

“Some Republican institutionalists have suggested that Congress has a responsibility to hold a vote over whether to authorize any war that goes beyond 60 days. And that could result in a symbolic rebuke.

“Even Republicans who support the war could be reluctant to take a vote that would closely tie them to an issue that runs the risk of becoming a political liability in the midterm elections.

“It’s also not clear how many GOP members would be willing to go on record rebuking their president in wartime. Even some Republicans who have been critical of the war have refused to vote against Trump — anxious about what that kind of rebuke would look like to US adversaries as well as what kind of retribution it might provoke from the president.”

Prominent MAGA figures, including Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene, have publicly opposed the war, contradicting Trump’s hawkish stance.

GOP strategists warn the Iran war threatens Republican electoral prospects heading into the midterm elections, with voter dissatisfaction over the conflict potentially costing the party congressional seats.

The Daily Signal’s Rob Bluey warned that voters may not have much more appetite for the conflict and its consequences.

He said, “Republicans are not approving of the president’s handling of the situation there in Iran, and I think that that’s a number that the president needs to pay close attention to, particularly when he wants to turn out the base to make sure that they vote in the midterm election this year.”
