A pricey taste in vino has landed one suspect in hot water after Irvine police say he made off with more than $2,600 worth of high-end wine from a local Gelson’s supermarket.

Police are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the man, who was caught on surveillance footage during the alleged theft.

in identifying the man, who was caught on surveillance footage during the alleged theft.

In a tongue-in-cheek Instagram post, the Irvine Police Department quipped: “You could say he took the phrase ‘grab life by the glass’ a little too seriously. At those prices, that’s not just a bad pour decision, it’s a full-bodied felony.”

The suspect is described as a black man wearing a white long-sleeved dress shirt, dark slacks, brown shoes and glasses at the time of the crime.

Police have released video images and are urging anyone who recognizes him to come forward.

“If you recognize him, don’t bottle it up,” the department added, directing tips to Detective Drake at [email protected] “so we can put a cork in this case.”

Under California Penal Code 487, theft of property valued above $950 qualifies as grand theft. With the alleged haul exceeding $2,600, the charge falls into “wobbler” territory, meaning it can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or a felony.

If filed as a felony, the suspect could face 16 months, two years, or three years behind bars.

Fines may reach up to $10,000, along with mandatory restitution to Gelson’s for the stolen goods.

A court could also impose a restraining order barring the individual from entering Gelson’s locations for up to two years.

If treated as a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty would be up to one year in county jail.
