White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett faced mockery after suggesting Americans “imagine” lower fuel prices during a CNBC interview on Tuesday.
Hassett acknowledged energy costs have risen since the Iran war began, but expressed confidence the situation would resolve itself, leading to price declines and near-zero inflation. He told the Federal Reserve to “pay attention” to this hypothetical scenario.
Social media critics seized on the vague language.
One X user, Armando, described Hassett’s statement as “John Lennon vibes,” while writer Jared Ryan Sears quipped, “Yes, the Fed often bases its monetary policy on wishful thinking.”
Critics also highlighted Hassett’s admission that the administration has no concrete plan, “‘Resolves itself somehow’ is an amazing admission they have no plan for how to resolve this,” noted Bluesky user Brent Travels.
