Mayor must end mob rule at police commission

Who runs the city — the mayor or the mob?

That’s a legitimate question after rioters disrupted yet another police commission hearing on Tuesday.

They shouted down LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. And — once again — they attacked a journalist from The California Post.

Yes, the police commission is meant to be a check on the power of the police.

It exists to allow civilian oversight — and public comment.

But the violent extremists who show up to police commission hearings silence their fellow citizens and the press.

They claim that they are exercising their First Amendment rights — but other Angelenos have the same rights. And press freedom is covered under that sacred provision, too.

The ultimate irony is that many of the protesters wear masks to hide their faces, even as they demand that ICE agents be forced to drop their masks.

The unruly hearing followed riots last week, when anti-ICE protesters attacked law enforcement officers, federal buildings, and — again — journalists.

Violent mobs appear to do what they like in LA. And the activists have become the very tyranny they say they oppose.

Mayor Karen Bass said nothing about the violence in the streets or at the police commission, beyond urging people to protest “peacefully.”

It’s time for more than words. We need law and order at the police commission. We cannot lose democracy to the mob.
