A Louisiana educator has been arrested and charged with having sex with a student, just months after being named as the school’s teacher of the year.
Christie Oster, 38, of Lafayette, was selected as the 2025-26 Teacher of the Year last September at Broussard Middle School, where she teaches eighth-grade math.
“Congratulations to our 2025-2026 BMS Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Christie Oster,” the school’s since-deleted Facebook post lauding the achievement read in part.
“At BMS, we are proud of ALL of our amazing teachers and staff who give so much each day to our students.”
She’s now facing charges of indecent behavior with juveniles and carnal knowledge of a juvenile, KLFY reported.
Oster has since been placed on leave, a spokesperson for Lafayette Parish School District told the outlet.
She is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student, Lafayette Police said.
Oster is being held in the Lafayette Parish Jail on $50,000 bond.
If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The investigation is ongoing.
