President Donald Trump may have just created the “kryptonite” that brings down his second administration, according to a new report.
Trump’s MAGA movement coalition has started to crack in recent weeks over the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, which Trump promised to release in full during his 2024 presidential campaign. The administration has sought to withhold files from the public, and the Justice Department has said it “needs more time” to comply with a discharge petition that required it to release all of the files by December 19.
Sarah Fitzpatrick of The Atlantic reported on Wednesday that these moves have created a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers who, together, have enough leverage to continue pressuring the administration to release more Epstein files.
Fitzpatrick spoke to lawmakers like Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), who described Congress’s efforts to release the files as a “fight for justice.”
“Khanna told me that there was an emerging ‘coalition of the right and left to fight for justice,’” she reported. “That alliance, he added, ‘has proven to be the kryptonite that marks the beginning of the end of the Trump era.’”
The files have already revealed that Trump was connected to the death of a newborn, has flown on Epstein’s private plane at least eight times, and was a potential subject of investigation by law enforcement officials. The president has not been accused of any wrongdoing, but the revelations are a “different story” than the one Trump sought to portray, according to the report.
The fight could also implicate other Trump administration officials, Fitzpatrick reported. Fitzpatrick spoke to Congressional sources who told her that the body is drafting subpoenas and a contempt resolution to force FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi to answer questions about their handling of the files.
