‘That was crazy’: New York Times report divides MAGA — and leads to CNN fact check

A recent New York Times article about dark money in American politics led one outgoing mayor to lob allegations against a former presidential candidate, leading to division among MAGA and a fact check.

The NYT recently published an article called “Nearly $900 Million Flowed in Secret to Help Harris and Trump in 2024.” One of the authors of the piece, Teddy Schleifer, took to social media, writing, “One donor gave $97.5 million to a nonprofit that gave $250 million to Kamala Harris’s super PAC.”

“You’ll never know who the donor is. Hello to our campaign-finance system!” he wrote, attaching the article stating that the donor was anonymous and that millions were sent in by “Future Forward USA Action, the so-called dark-money group of the main super PAC backing” Joe Biden and Harris.

That led to the former Democrat Eric Adams, once the popular mayor of New York, to lash out against Harris herself:

“Her Justice Department wanted to lock me up for more than 30 years for taking an upgraded airline seat 10 years ago,” he claimed, misrepresenting the charges against him.

That caused a division among allies of Trump, with the president’s confidant Roger Stone saying, “No, it was the $100,000 in illegal contribution you took from the Turks that you then laundered through New York City straw donors then applied for matching funds. in return you let the Turks have an occupancy permit for a building that was not safe. Crook.”

Criminal defense attorney Peter Cheese, Esq. said, “You keep spinning this yarn, Eric, and it doesn’t get any more believable.”

Elon Musk, however, still an ally to Trump, agreed with Adams. The billionaire wrote, “That was crazy. There has been too much abuse of our legal system.”

Another right-wing tech CEO, Reza Chowdhury, asked, “Why did Kamala and the autopen administration dump a quarter of million illegal entrants to the US into NYC without any meaningful support?”

Journalist Henry Goldman said to Adams, “The press corps never adequately covered your mental health.”

“If I were still in City Hall it’s a story I would have wanted to do,” he then added.

CNN’s Edward-Isaac Dovere provided a fact check:

“Kamala Harris, never having been president, was never in charge of the Justice Department — and the charges against the outgoing mayor were supported by prosecutors with a range of political persuasions.”

Union political director Kevin Elkins said it was “bribery.”

“And then you were about to get indicted again for destroying documents before Daddy Trump saved you,” Elkins then concluded.
