CNN’s Jake Tapper methodically dismantles Trump’s rambling Davos speech

CNN anchor Jake Tapper had no patience for President Donald Trump’s rambling speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos during the opening segment of his show on Wednesday.

Trump traveled to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the annual gathering of the world’s economic elite, where he gave a speech that critics derided as “raving” and “mad.” The New York Times fact-checked 12 false or misleading claims Trump made about international affairs, including the Kingdom of Denmark’s relationship with Greenland, and about Trump’s domestic accomplishments.

Tapper broke down Trump’s speech during the first segment of “The Lead” on Wednesday.

For instance, he pointed out parts where Trump appeared to confuse Greenland and Iceland. He then played a clip of Trump mixing up the two countries, and compared it to the description offered by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who said reporters were the ones mixing them up.

“Trump clearly said Iceland,” Tapper said. “It’s not that big a deal. Why lie about it?”

Tapper also took issue with Trump calling Danish politicians “ungrateful” for America giving Greenland back to Denmark at some point in history.

The CNN host issued a brutal fact-check to Trump’s claims.

“First of all, a lot of soldiers from Denmark were killed fighting for the United States after 9/11. So I don’t know that calling them ungrateful is correct,” Tapper said.

“Another fact. After Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the U.S. assumed responsibility for Greenland’s defense and established a military presence on the island,” he added. “But the United States never possessed Greenland.”
