Jubilant Sykes was found stabbed to death in his Santa Monica, Calif., home on Monday — and his son has been arrested as the main suspect. The Grammy nominee was 71.
According to a press release, Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) officers responded to a 911 call from a person who reported “an assault in progress.”
Once authorities arrived, they were directed inside the home, where they located Sykes, who was suffering from “critical injuries consistent with a stabbing.”

“Santa Monica Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced the individual deceased at the scene,” the press release read.
SMPD said the opera singer’s 31-year-old son, Micah Sykes, was “found inside the residence and taken into custody without incident.”
The police said they “secured the scene, and subsequently obtained a search warrant” and recovered the weapon at the home.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation,” per the press release.

Micah has been booked for homicide and the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
Micah reportedly had mental health issues over the years.
Per Rolling Stone, a “Southern Californian woman” filed a restraining order against Micah in 2017.
The petition read, “Micah shows signs of mental instability. His behavior is unpredictable. Micah poses a real threat… and he has been violent with his own family members.”

Micah was also placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold after an attempted break-in, according to the restraining order petition obtained by Rolling Stone.
Jubilant often shared sweet messages about his three sons on social media.
In 2020, the musician posted a throwback image of himself with his boys and them as adult men as he spoke about the racial profiling they endured.

“Seeing these photos of my sons as young boys and young adult men, moves me now to tears,”Jubilant captioned the post. “Knowing how blessed we’ve been to still be here and to experience a LOVE that transcends all.
“Yet who would ever think that all of these young men as well as myself would at some point in our adult lives experience being hand cuffed, put in a police car, stripped search from the waist down in front of your peers and taken to a downtown precinct,” he added.
“All at different times in our lives. What we had in common – we were black men innocent of any crime. It happened to my father, it happened to me and it’s happened to my sons.”
