A group of people suspected of being involved in recent mail thefts attempted to check into a Southern California hotel using fraudulent credit cards and IDs, police said.
Staff members at the hotel in Huntington Beach reported the incident to police on Tuesday morning, but the suspects had already left before officers arrived.
The suspects “didn’t get very far,” though, as officers found them during a check of the area, the Huntington Beach Police Department posted.
“They uncovered a pile of evidence, including numerous fraudulent IDs, forged checks, and several checks that may belong to victims of mail theft,” police said.
Investigators are sorting through the evidence to identify and contact the victims.
“Needless to say, the suspects’ ‘vacation plans’ changed, and they were arrested on multiple felony charges and outstanding warrants, then checked into the HBPD jail,” police said.
The hotel staff was thanked for their alert reporting of the crime, and residents were also encouraged to call police if they see anything suspicious, even if the suspects have already left.
“We’ll still check the area, because in Huntington Beach, crime doesn’t pay,” police said.
