Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune film is in the works.

Based on the books by Frank Herbert, the first film, Dune: Part One arrived in October 2021, and Part Two was delayed until March 2024 because of the writer’s and actor’s strikes. Though audiences still have at least a year and some change before they can expect the third installment in theaters, there have been noteworthy developments.

Read on for everything we know about Dune 3.

When will Dune 3 come out?

Deadline first heard back in June 2024 that a December 2026 slot was being held for the film’s theatrical release. It has since been slotted for December 18, 2026.

Is Dune 3 in production?

Yes, the film aimed to go into production over the summer, and Robert Pattinson mentioned shooting the film in the desert in an interview with IndieWire ahead of his film Die My Love co-starring Jennifer Lawrence out Nov. 7.

What will Dune 3 be about?

The movie will likely follow the events of Herbert’s second book in the series Dune Messiah, which takes place 12 years after the events of Dune.

Will there be new characters in Dune 3?

Yes, Nakoa-Wolf Mamoa and Ida Brooke have boarded the project, set to portray Leto II and Ghanima, the twin children of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Zendaya’s Chani. The pair are born at the end of Dune Messiah.

Robert Pattinson entered talks for a villain role — that of Scytale — in April 2025.

Chalamet and Zendaya are just two of the expected returning cast. Jason Mamoa is expected to return to play a resurrected ghola of his character Duncan Idaho. Mamoa’s son will be making his big-screen debut as Leto II.

Will there be more Dune films?

No, Denis Villeneuve has declared that his vision for adapting Dune includes two films that make up the first book and then a third.

He will direct the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios.
