A 15-year-old boy died after being stabbed during a house party on Long Island on Monday night that was attended by roughly 100 teenagers, the police said.
The boy, Liam Delemo, was stabbed when a fight broke out at 10:25 p.m. outside a home in West Babylon, N.Y., owned by Bonnie Miranda, the authorities said.
Liam was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, the police said.
The police said Ms. Miranda, 70, had allowed a grandchild of hers to host the party. She was charged Wednesday with a misdemeanor under a Suffolk County law that bans adults from knowingly allowing children to consume alcohol at their homes. She was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Ms. Miranda declined to comment on Wednesday. The police said they had not yet determined who stabbed Liam.
The boy’s father, Michael Delemo, remembered his son as a free spirit who had been intensely loyal to his friends. His favorite hobby was riding his motorbike with others, he said in a phone interview.
“He didn’t have any siblings, so those were his brothers,” Mr. Delemo, 48, said. “He rode everywhere on his bike. He was only 15, but we had every ounce of trust in him to do the right thing.”
Liam lived with his father, a truck driver, and his mother, Hope Delemo, 49, a middle school teacher, in West Babylon, just a few minutes’ drive from where he was attacked.
Mr. Delemo said that Liam had been in the 11th grade at West Babylon High School and that he had been on the honor roll and had excelled at math. But the boy had also faced difficulties, his father said. He had been suspended from school after being involved in a fight over the summer, and was set to return on Nov. 20. Liam had also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, his father said.
“He wasn’t, you know, a wild man, but he rode wheelies.” Mr. Delemo said.
A spokeswoman for the West Babylon Union Free School District did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.
Mr. Delemo said he had received a phone call from one of Liam’s friends just after his son was stabbed. He immediately drove to Ms. Miranda’s house, he said. “He didn’t look good at all,” Mr. Delemo said of his son. “He was pale, white.” He said that Liam told his mother that he loved her before he was placed in an ambulance.
“No parent wants to go through this,” Mr. Delemo said. He added, “Any time he left the house, I always made sure, and my wife made sure, that he knew he was loved.”
