EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MX Player’s Rise and Fall has become the most-watched show in the Indian streamer’s history.
Data provided by the service suggests the Banijay Asia-made reality series has set records in viewership, social engagement and audience participation.
Over six weeks, the daily show amassed almost 500 million views on the player and topped local reality streaming charts. That puts it above other Amazon MX Player shows such as Aashram, Bhaukaal and Sixer.
The series featured celebrities such as Arbaaz Patel, Aarush Bhola, Aahana Kumra, Aditya Narayan, Arjun Bijlani, Dhanashree Verma, Kubra Sait, Kiku Sharda, Anaya Banger, Nayandeep Rakshit, Bali, Noorin Sha, and Akriti Negi. Based on the Channel 4 series, which bombed in the UK, they took up roles as either Rulers or Workers, with the Rulers living in a luxury penthouse and the Workers housed in the basement and made to carry out tasks to add to the prize pot. All3Media International shops the format worldwide and struck the license deal in India.
Having begun well, with Ormax Media data placing its first and second weeks just behind the long-running Bigg Boss in the ratings, it has continued to grow an audience. In a first-of-its-kind pact, the show ran on both Amazon MX Player and Sony Entertainment Television, as it attracted the likes of Lux Cozi and McDowell’s, who partnered on brand integration moments and other interactive audience touchpoints.
“The success and cultural impact of Rise and Fall has been phenomenal,” said Karan Bedi, Director & Head at Amazon MX Player. “From breaking viewership records to igniting massive social conversations and advertiser enthusiasm, the show has demonstrated how entertainment and brand storytelling can powerfully converge. The momentum we’ve seen in just the first season sets a precedent for what reality TV can achieve on India’s leading OTT service.”
Amogh Dusad, Director & Head of Content at Amazon MX Player, added the show had “set out to reinvent the reality genre in India,” and claimed “audiences responded with incredible passion.”
“Introducing a disruptive format centered around the themes of money, power, and human ambition, we set out to create something fresh for our audiences and their response has been overwhelming,” added Deepak Dhar, founder and group CEO of Banijay Asia and Endemol Shine India. “Adapting this concept for India while retaining its global appeal was both a challenge and an opportunity.
“With its dynamic mix of contestants, high-stakes challenges, and unpredictable gameplay, Rise and Fall has redefined what large-scale reality storytelling can look like in India. Our partnership with Amazon MX Player has been instrumental in bringing this international format to audiences across India.”
The series ended after 42 days on October 17, with a winner, who we won’t name here to avoid spoilers, crowned in the final episode.
