FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — Mayor Ron Tyler was officially sworn into office Monday morning at Florence City Hall.
“I’m ready to get to work, so this is a great morning, and I love the ceremony. I love having everybody come out, standing room only in there, but I am eager to get into the offic,e” Tyler said.
It was a packed house on Monday morning at City Hall as council members were also seated. Kaytrina Simmons, councilwoman for District 1, was nominated as council president for the second time.
“Well, I’m feeling excited, overwhelmed, and I’m ver,y ver,y very thankful and grateful to the council for trusting me for the presidency, and again, so I look forward to us moving forwar,d” Simmons said.
Simmons tells News 19 that there are many tasks they want to get to work on as soon as possible.
“Well, we’ve got a lot that we gotta hit the ground running, of course. We have a budget that still has not been passed, and then we’re gonna be faced with a City Hall with that, and then of course some pay increases, and so we’ve got a lot on the table on the plate right now that we’re gonna have to get them up to speed,” Simmons said.
Mayor Tyler says he wants Florence to flourish and be an attractive place for people to come and live.
“The very reason I wanted to run for mayor is because I wanted to create a community and build on this community, and have the idea that Florence is the place that our families can live, this is a place they can learn, this is the place we can work, right here in Florence, worship and we can play,” Tyler said.
Simmons said it’s a new era and that the Florence community should be excited.
“Let’s put the past behind us and let’s move in a forward direction. What’s happened in the past, we can’t change it, but let’s move forward,” Simmons said.
The very first council meeting for this new team will be held on Tuesday night at City Hall at 5:30 and Mayor Tyler encourages everyone to come out to those meetings so your voice can be heard.
