HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama A&M University held its second annual North Alabama Ag Expo Saturday morning, giving the community a closer look at the world of farming.

Event Chair Donna Gilbert and Co-Chair Rosie Landers say teaching people about agriculture is important for many reasons.

“We are thrilled because the community is why we’re doing this. Because we need to reach out to everyone so that they can see that there are options for them that is available not only in ag careers, but also in growing their own food,” Gilbert said.

Booths at the expo showcased gardening, animals and more. Raffle prizes were also available for expo attendees to win.

Carlita Edwards, a former president of the Master Gardeners of North Alabama, says she’s excited about this year’s big turnout.

“It’s even bigger than last year. And so many intelligent, great questions people ask us. It’s a lot of fun to be able to share our research-based knowledge,” Edwards said.

She says there has been an increase in young people interested in agriculture. It’s this curiosity that makes her job as an educator not only fun but meaningful.

“You wouldn’t believe how many children come through. We have a grow your own lima bean class, and they could tell us what’s going on and how many can identify these plants that are here to my right. It’s really neat to see their interest.”

Event organizers say they’re hopeful for an even bigger turnout next year.

We just want to encourage all of the local farmers, wanna be farmers, the supporters of the organizations and the companies that are here donating. Please support them. Please feel free to reach out to us and get on the schedule next year. We are looking forward to growing beyond this building,” Landers said.
