Both parents and a grandmother of a child found dead in Lynwood have been charged with murder and face potential life sentences, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
The boy, identified only as Isaiah H., is believed to have died on Oct. 24, several days before the discovery of his body on Tuesday. The District Attorney’s Office said Isaiah was 8 years old at the time of his death, though earlier reports said he was 7.
Neighbors have been left in shock after officials arrested those closest to Isaiah: his parents and paternal grandmother:
Destiny Luckie Harrison and Daniel Alberto Monzon, both 25, and 45-year-old Ana Carcamo Zarceno were each charged with murder, torture and child abuse resulting in death, as well as allegations that they did willful harm resulting in death.
Additionally, Monzon and Zarceno were charged with being accessories after the fact.
Prosecutors have alleged abuse “over a long period of time,” with Isaiah “succumb[ing] to his injuries early on Oct. 24 [before] his body was found days later in a cooler filled with ice.” Officials previously said Isaiah was found in a freezer.
“The horrific abuse that Isaiah endured is made even worse by the fact that, as alleged, it was at the hands of the people who were meant to love and protect him,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in the release. “Our office is committed to ensuring that those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions and that justice will be secured for Isaiah.”
The three were scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Compton.
Bail was set for each at $2 million, and, if convicted, they face sentences of 32 years to life in state prison.
