A Kentucky woman accepted a package from a courier on Wednesday, expecting her usual delivery of time-sensitive medications and medical supplies. When she opened it, though, she found two human arms and four human fingers on ice.

The woman called 911 from her home in Hopkinsville, Ky., about 73 miles northwest of Nashville. Emergency responders then called Scott Daniel, the coroner for Christian County, Ky., who said he went to the woman’s home to retrieve the body parts.

He said he took the limbs and digits to the local morgue, where a courier retrieved them on Thursday morning. Mr. Daniel declined to disclose the name of the courier company that made the delivery or identify the homeowner who received the package.

The homeowner did finally receive the package she was originally expecting a day later, Mr. Daniel said.

The package containing the body parts originated in Nashville, and was supposed to be delivered to a school or hospital in that city for surgical training, Mr. Daniel said.

The body parts inside it came from four different bodies, he said.

“I didn’t ask,” he said in response to a question about the source of the body parts. “I mean, I’d assume, obviously, I think they came from cadavers that had been donated.”

For anyone who might find themselves in a similar predicament, there’s no need to refrigerate the parts or do anything extreme, Mr. Daniel said: Just call 911 or a nonemergency dispatch line.

“I think she did the right thing,” he said.
