Halloween the day has become more like Halloween the season in New York City.

In places like Maspeth, Queens, and Bushwick, Brooklyn, bars, clubs and parks have been hosting events where people can appear not as paralegals or communications assistants, but as the pope or that one dude from Oasis.

But the main event was Friday night in Manhattan, where the 52nd annual Greenwich Village Parade snaked its way up Sixth Avenue from Canal Street to 15th Street.

This year’s theme was “It’s a Potluck,” and the parade organizers selected City Harvest, a food rescue organization, as its grand marshal.

Marchers costumed themselves accordingly, dressing as M&Ms, fruit salads, zombie chefs and flamboyant Ronald McDonalds. Members of a 17-piece musical ensemble called the Hungry March Band were dressed as pieces of silverware.

“We felt it best to be the utensils,” said Kris Anton, 49, a snare drummer. “To serve up the feast.”

Victor Mather, who has been a reporter and editor at The Times for 25 years, covers sports and breaking news.
