The 900-year-old Château du Clos de Vougeot in the heart of Burgundy is generally a courtly sort of place, the kind that puts on formal dinners and chamber music concerts.
But on a recent chilly October night, the usual tuxedos and gowns were gone, as was the polite applause that might punctuate a ceremonial dinner in honor of world dignitaries.
Instead, the stately chateau played host to Vin et Hip Hop: From Brooklyn to Burgundy, a celebration of wine and music that shook the old pile to the rafters. Musicians raised glasses to exhort the crowd of 750, the maximum permitted by the local fire department, and the ecstatic audience yelled back its approval.
This was the rare wine event that crossed generational and cultural divides, which has been the goal of organizers since the first event was held in 2023. Older wine collectors and winemakers mingled with guests who might not have attended without the musical lineup.
