Two cats are safe and recovering with their owners after Orange County Fire Authority crews pulled them from a burning apartment in Santa Ana last week.
The fire, which broke out Oct. 22, prompted a rapid response from OCFA, with body camera footage showing firefighters arriving and quickly deploying hose lines to contain the flames and search the apartment for people and pets.
Inside, firefighters found two cats, one orange, the other black, and safely removed them from the smoke-filled apartment as they meowed in confusion.
No human injuries were reported, and crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other homes, officials said.
The dramatic video, which was shared on social media, is an example of the urgency and technical training exhibited by well-trained firefighters, officials said.
“Their swift actions not only saved the family pets, but also prevented the fire from spreading further and damaging additional units,” the department said in a statement.
The department also reminded residents to take steps to reduce fire risk in the home, including not leaving food unattended while cooking, keeping flammable objects at least three feet away from heat sources, and regularly testing smoke alarms.
They also encourage families to create and practice a home escape plan.
The cats, OCFA officials said Friday, are “doing well.”
