History goes to the highest bidder.

‘Auction’

A bigwig auctioneer encounters a long-lost Egon Schiele masterwork in this drama directed by Pascal Bonitzer.

From our review:

The stakes and the haul in the French movie “Auction” aren’t as spectacularly high as those in the recent Louvre jewelry heist. Even so, there is much on the line in this smart, digressive, agreeably sardonic drama set in the art world.

In theaters. Read the full review.

A bit of a mixed deck.

‘Ballad of a Small Player’

The latest from the “Conclave” director Edward Berger follows Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell), a down on his luck baccarat player.

From our review:

Everything in it — from baccarat onward — could have been tightened up so that we believe that Doyle himself is a man of insatiable desire and not, as it seems, just a guy to whom life has dealt a pretty unlucky hand from the start. “Ballad of a Small Player” contains a great story, but it’s bogged down by its trappings.

Watch on Netflix. Read the full review.

It’s draining, and we’re not just talking about the vampires.
