In a few days, people all over New York City will be focused on a big race, full of colorful slogans and signs.

No, not the mayoral election. Sunday is the 54th New York City Marathon. Fifty thousand runners from all over the globe will be at the starting line, and thousands more New Yorkers will come out along the 26.2 mile course to cheer them as they attempt to finish what many consider the most challenging of the seven major marathons.

Whether you’re running, cheering or maybe just trying to get around the city on Sunday to early vote, here’s what you need to know:

What’s different about this year’s race?

Last year, the New York Road Runners, which organizes the event, tested out crossing zones in two locations in Brooklyn so that spectators and New Yorkers trying to get around had a way to cross the course. This year, they added two more in Manhattan.

Follow the instructions of the volunteers at these spots to cross.

  • Brooklyn: Lafayette Avenue and Fulton Street near Atlantic Terminal

  • Brooklyn: Bedford and Broadway in Williamsburg

  • Manhattan: First Avenue at 72nd Street

  • Manhattan: First Avenue and 86th Street

For runners, the pre-race bag drop has moved to Central Park West between 69th and 70th streets on Friday and Saturday. Ted Metellus, the marathon’s director, said they moved it because people had trouble finding the bandshell near 72nd Street that the Road Runners used in previous years.

Also, the Road Runners have consolidated to one phone app. If people have already downloaded the NYRR app, they do not need to download a new one.

Weather forecast

With partly cloudy skies and temperatures starting near 45 and warming to 57 by the afternoon, Sunday is shaping up to be decent for both runners and spectators. There will be a slight wind chill when the first waves start, but not unbearable. There also might be slight humidity in the air near the start but probably not bad and diminishing as the later waves begin their race.
