An Illinois woman who slowly poisoned her former police chief boyfriend to death using eye drops learned her fate at a sentencing hearing Monday, according to authorities and reports.

Marcy Oglesby, 53, was sentenced to 50 years behind bars for first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery for killing 71-year-old Richard Young, the former police chief of Maquon, KWQC reported.

Marcy Oglesby, 53, was sentenced to 50 years behind bars for first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery for killing 71-year-old Richard Young, the former police chief of Maquon. Knox County Jail

Oglesby began lacing Young’s food and drink with tetrahydrozoline, a chemical found in eye drops and other medications, in the summer of 2021, Knox County prosecutors said.

The longtime police chief was poisoned over several months and died on Nov. 1, 2021, after his health had steadily declined, authorities said.

“She killed a man who loved her and who cared for her for nearly 30 years, and she didn’t just kill him. She poisoned him and watched him suffer,” Knox County State’s Attorney Ashley Worby said at sentencing, according to the outlet.

After Young’s death, Oglesby hid his body in a storage unit across the street from their shared home, and his remains were located a year later, on Oct. 7, 2022, the outlet reported.

An autopsy of his severely decomposed body confirmed he died from tetrahydrozoline poisoning, the outlet said.

Oglesby was convicted of charges in June, records showed.

“I respectfully disagree with the court’s findings, and I will not be referencing a murder that did not happen,” she told the outlet.

“He didn’t go into that box immediately. I put him back to bed and continued to talk to him for three days,” she chillingly said.

Friends of Young recalled the police chief’s dedication to public service at the hearing.

“Rick was always there for everyone. It didn’t matter if you were friend or foe. He stood watch over our community for many, many years, and he was a good man who deserved so much, who deserved more than what he got,” Natalie Mason, a friend of Richard Young, said at Oglesby’s sentencing.

Oglesby was also credited with the 326 days she spent in pretrial detention.

A motion for a new trial for Oglesby will be heard on Nov. 6.
