Family movie Kangaroo has become the highest-grossing Australian film of the year to date at the local box office. Since premiering in September via Studiocanal Australia, the comedy about an unlikely friendship and a group of the titular marsupials has grossed A$5.2M ($3.4M USD). Including releases outside Oz so far, the global running gross is $8M.
From director Kate Woods, Kangaroo stars Ryan Corr (House of the Dragon) as former TV personality Chris Masterman, who becomes stranded in an Outback town where he teams up with 12-year-old Indigenous girl Charlie (newcomer Lily Whiteley) to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned joeys. The cast also features Deborah Mailman, Brooke Satchwell, Rachel House and Wayne Blair.
Among other notable achievements, Kangaroo is the 2nd highest grossing Australian film of the year worldwide, behind Together.
Elizabeth Trotman, CEO of Studiocanal Australia and New Zealand, said, “We are beyond thrilled to see audiences embrace Kangaroo the way they have. It’s a story that celebrates compassion, connection and the beauty of our country, and we’re incredibly proud of what it has achieved. Seeing Kangaroo find a home in so many hearts across the country and the world has been an extraordinary achievement for everyone involved.”
Sold in more than 40 markets (no U.S. deal as yet), upcoming releases include Indonesia (December 3), UK (January 30, 2026) and Netherlands (April 15, 2026). The latter two will be handled by Studiocanal which also released Kangaroo in Germany in August, where it grossed $2.7M.
This is the first feature from the Australian production arm of Studiocanal, produced in partnership with Bunya Productions and Brindle Films. It was made with the support of Screen Territory, Screen NSW Made in NSW Fund and Screen Australia.
Set and filmed on location in the Australian Red Centre town of Alice Springs, on Arrernte Country, and Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on the traditional land and waters of the Bidjigal, Birrabirragal and Gadigal Peoples, Kangaroo is inspired by the life of Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns, founder of The Kangaroo Sanctuary, Alice Springs.
Studiocanal is having a great streak of late, including I Swear in the UK, Our Girls in Netherlands and Dog 51 in France.
