EXCLUSIVE: Foster Dade, Hulu‘s YA drama pilot written by You co-creator Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran, has found its female lead. Chloe East (Heretic) has been tapped to star in the project, based on Nash Jenkins’ debut novel Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos, which comes from Warner Bros. Television where Berlanti Productions is under an overall deal.
Taking place in 2008 and present day, Foster Dade is described as a sophisticated mystery set at an East Coast boarding school that explores privilege, scandal, sexuality and masculinity amid the rise of social media, millennial anxiety and pharmaceuticals.
The story revolves around Foster Dade, a new transfer student at the elite Kennedy boarding school.
East plays Annabeth who moves through Kennedy with an indecipherable kind of magic — the sort that makes boys fall under her spell before they realize what’s happened, and Foster is no exception. She takes Foster under her wing, and their chemistry is undeniable. But beneath her wit and warmth lies something guarded, secrets and sorrows carefully concealed. Whatever pulls them together may also be the thing that tears them apart.
Berlanti Prods.’ Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman executive produce alongside Doran, Jenkins, Robbie Rogers as well as Donald De Line of De Line Pictures. Filming on the pilot is slated to begin in December.
East, who appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated The Fabelmans, most recently starred in A24’s psychological thriller Heretic opposite Hugh Grant. Her other film credits include Kornel Mundruczó’s At the Sea, Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and Hailey Gates’ directorial feature Atropia. She previously starred in HBO Max series Genera+ion and was a series regular on ABC’s Kevin (Probably) Saves the World. East will next be seen starring in Chandler Levack’s Netflix comedy Roommates. She is repped by WME, Link Entertainment, Vault Entertainment and Felker Toczek Suddleson McGinnis Ryan.
