Wicked: For Good is fast approaching, which means Ariana Grande and her stylist Law Roach have a bevy of looks planned for the press tour. The pair began by pulling from a piece of movie history for Grande, who stars as Glinda in the two-part Wicked franchise—having her pay homage to The Wizard of Oz in a photo shoot posted Monday, October 27th.
Grande—who recently dyed her hair back to its natural brunette, after years of sporting blonde locks to play Glinda—wore a black, shimmering dress captured in black-and-white by photographer Katia Temkin. According to Roach, Grande’s dress was designed by famed film costume designer Gilbert Adrian. Adrian was MGM’s chief costume designer from 1928 to 1941, and was often credited on screen with the phrase “Gowns by Adrian.” He’s known as the mastermind behind Dorothy’s blue checkered dress, Dorothy’s ruby slippers, and the original Glinda’s frilly pink dress. Many of Adrian’s works are now on display in museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fashion Institute of Technology, both in New York.

There’s more couture and movie magic in store for Grande, according to Roach, who also styles Emmy winner Zendaya. “Oh, baby, there’s a mood board,” the stylist and Project Runway judge told People at the Anastasia Soare and Oprah Winfrey in Conversation at Raising Brows event in Los Angeles on Oct. 23.“There are hours and hours of fitting and laughing and swearing. It’s just a lot of daydreaming and imagination.”
Roach highlighted Grande’s “gratitude and appreciation” for both playing Glinda and getting to wear dresses like this one: “She’s so excited and grateful to the designers who are making these gowns and dresses for her.” He added that their working relationship is friendly and playful: “We’re both Cancers,” Roach said of their astrological signs. “We both have big personalities and really funny humor. It’s us making each other laugh, lots of jokes.”
Roach worked with Grande before her pivot into acting, and says he feels “no pressure at all to outdo her press tour from last year. “It’s just like coming back home, like two good friends reunited, and get to play in clothes — and a lot of clothes — which is so fun,” he said.
