Jeff Bridges reprised his role as Kevin Flynn in Tron: Ares and is sharing his take on movies being perceived as flops after their opening-weekend box-office results.

Tron: Ares opened on October 10 and had an opening weekend at the U.S. box office of $33.5M and a $60.5M global debut. The third film in the franchise was initially expected to open at $40M-$45M domestically and $80M-$90M globally.

Deadline reported that Tron: Ares had a cost of $220M and would have a loss of $132.7M after all ancillaries, if its final global gross stalled at $160M.

However, Bridges believes that a film can grow even after an opening weekend.

“It’s interesting, though, how movies are received at opening weekend,” Bridges told Entertainment Weekly. “I remember ‘Heaven’s Gate’ was considered, you know, very disappointing or a flop, but nowadays it’s considered kind of a masterpiece.”

He added, “So it’s interesting how things can grow on you.”

Bridges reflected that “as an individual, often, I have not liked a movie,” adding, “And then a couple weeks or months later, I’ll see it again. I’ll say, ‘What was I thinking?’ As the Dude would say, ‘That’s just like your opinion, man.’”

Heaven’s Gate was pulled from theaters after a limited release due to negative reviews. The film was cut for its wide release, but it only grossed $3.5M on a $44M budget. Although the film wasn’t a box-office success at its opening, it has received some praise over the years.

Tron: Ares also starred Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson.
