HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — With thousands in Madison County expected to lose the support of SNAP benefits on November 1, many are growing concerned for their neighbors.

The team at Metro Diner off Airport Road in Huntsville is looking for a way to support those who will need a little extra help putting food on the table in the coming weeks. Through the month of November, they will be hosting a food drive.

“We just want to help everybody that we can,” said Ashley Bond, who is heading up the drive.

Because Metro Diner has a fridge and freezer, they can accept perishable items, like meats and dairy, in addition to non-perishable foods.

“We’re getting hit very hard with the shutdown,” Bond said. “You’re not getting paid. If you’re a government employee, you’re not getting food stamps, next month, for Thanksgiving, which is a terrible time to decide that people aren’t going to get their food stamps. We’re just we’re really hoping that this will be able to provide those people with the meals that they need this month.”

Metro is partnered with the Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen, which will come to pick up these donations as they come in, and make sure they make it into the hands of the people who need them.

Donations can be dropped off at the Metro Diner location on Airport Road between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. every day of the week.
