Jennifer Lawrence is reflecting on her old interviews and finds herself “annoying,” saying she was cautious about speaking to the press to promote her new movies due to potential backlash.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Lawrence said she once told Viola Davis, “Every time I do an interview, I think, ‘I can’t do this to myself again.’ I feel like I lose so much control over my craft when I have to do press for a movie.”

When the topic of past interviews is addressed, Lawrence winced and said, “Oh, no. So hyper. So embarrassing.”

The public initially adored Lawrence due to her candid interviews, which stemmed from her self-deprecation, allowing fans to connect with her. However, the perception that she was being fake took over with deep dives on social media, and backlash to her soon followed.

“Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,” she said. “And so it was a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!’”

She added, “I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was spot-on.”

Lawrence referenced Grande’s parody of her from a 2016 episode of SNL. In the Celebrity Family Feud sketch, Grande as Lawrence encapsulates how fans began to perceive the Oscar winner.

“They told me not to do a game show, but I was like, ‘Screw it, I can have fun. I’m a regular person,’” Grande as Lawrence said.

Kenan Thompson as Steve Harvey joked, “You know, you say you a regular person mora than any regular person I know.”

Later on in the sketch, Grande’s Lawrence says, “I’m just, like, a snackaholic. I mean, I love Pringles. If no one’s looking, I’ll eat, like, a whole can.”

Lawrence noted that the public backlash seemed “uninhabitable,” adding, “I felt—I didn’t feel, I was, I think—rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.”

This is not the first time that Lawrence has opened up about how audiences perceive her. In 2021, she opened up to Vanity Fair about taking a break from Hollywood.

“I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’” she said. “I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life. Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’ And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul.”
