The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles is set to acquire a 30-unit building in Koreatown for the express purpose of refurbishing it for homeless individuals and families.
HACLA announced Monday that they were able to secure a $9 million state grant to acquire the building, located at 630 N. Oxford Ave., under California’s Homekey+ initiative, which functions as a support for communities to expand their permanent supportive housing supply as well as services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
“Aligning state and local resources is a vital strategy that allows us to quickly convert available properties into permanent housing for the people of Los Angeles,” HACLA President and CEO Lourdes Castro Ramírez said in a statement.
The project is being undertaken with the help of Finding Hope Inc., which is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that was “established and authorized to transact business and exercise powers under and pursuant to the provisions of the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law,” according to the resolution regarding the North Oxford Avenue property acquisition.
When all is said and done, the multifamily building will be converted from its current state – 28 units and two accessory dwelling units – into permanent supportive housing. Two additional units will be for managers, HACLA says.
Future residents will have access to supportive services, including intensive case management, behavioral and physical health services, thanks to People Assisting the Homeless.
Since its establishment in 1938, HACLA has expanded its administrative portfolio to include 164 properties containing more than 12,000 units, officials say. Just over a dozen of those properties are exclusively public housing developments.
In addition, HACLA has provided more than 60,000 housing vouchers and certificates through their Section 8 program.
