EXCLUSIVE: Cohen Media Group has acquired North American rights to Franz, the biopic of literary icon Franz Kafka by three-time Oscar nominated Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland (In Darkness).
Conceived as a kaleidoscopic mosaic spanning from Kafka’s birth in 19th-century Prague to his death in post–World War I Vienna, Holland’s film captures both the man and the myth, revealing the Metamorphosis writer’s creative vision, alienation, and lasting cultural imprint.
Poland’s entry for the Best International Film Oscar stars Idan Weiss, Peter Kurth, Jenovéfa Boková, Ivan Trojan, and Sandra Korzeniak.
The acquisition was negotiated by Robert Aaronson, Executive Vice President of Cohen Media Group and Julien Razafindranaly Head of Sales negotiated for Films Boutique. Cohen Media Group will release the film theatrically in the U.S. in 2025.
Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film has screened at festivals including San Sebastian, Rio de Janeiro, Busan, Vancouver, Chicago, Woodstock and will also be playing at Newport Beach, Denver, and Cairo.
Deadline described the feature as “a playful biopic that investigates the enigma of one of the 20th century’s most influential writers.”
Produced by Sarka Cimbalova and Agnieszka Holland the film was co-produced by Marcin Wierzchosławski, Alicja Jagodzińska, Uwe Schott, and Jorgo Narjes with Mike Downey and Jeff Field serving as executive producers.
