PHOENIX — A 148-unit affordable housing community designed specifically for seniors celebrated its grand opening in Glendale.
The Cascalote is located on a 4.4-acre site near 51st Avenue and Glen Drive.
The $9.5 million project was approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act in April 2022.
Units will be assigned with priorities given to veterans, seniors exiting homelessness and those living with disabilities.
“Seniors on fixed incomes across Maricopa County are finding it harder to afford housing,” Supervisor Kate Brophy McGee said in a press release. “Developments like The Cascalote provide these seniors comfort and stability. Best of all, they can remain part of their community.”
Brophy McGee also serves as vice chair of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
Leaders from Mercy Housing, a national organization focused on affordable home developments who partnered in the Cascalote project, were in attendance for the ceremony.
It is the first development they’ve partnered to build in Arizona in 13 years.
“This is an exciting milestone for Mercy Housing Mountain Plains, and we are thankful to our partners at Maricopa County and the City of Glendale for making this development a reality,” President Shelly Marquez said.
Residents can choose between studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with rents ranging from $963 to $1,389 per month.
