SPOILER ALERT: This post contains details on 9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 3, which aired on Thursday, October 23, on ABC.
9-1-1‘s latest episode opens up the universe again with the first mention of 9-1-1: Nashville, the new spinoff series.
Deadline understands that this is not an official crossover, but it does give viewers hope that in the future, a storyline could see both crews interact on-screen.
On the latest episode of 9-1-1, Angela Bassett’s Athena and Aisha Hinds’ Hen are in space, and things got out of control.
Hen was offered a chance to go to space with a plus-one after she helped save the life of tech billionaire Tripp Hauser, a character played by guest star Mark Consuelos. However, as a geostorm ravages Earth, Athena and Hen’s space mission teeters on the edge.
The latest episode sees Athena, Hen, and the space crew try to survive as they are hit and fire starts consuming their capsule. Athena can ease consumption by opening a hatch, but it leaves them vulnerable as oxygen escapes.
Episode 3 of Season 9 is titled “The Sky Is Falling,” and literally, Los Angeles is ravaged by debris landing from space and causing havoc for citizens.
In space, the crew tries to contact Earth and is connected with the Nashville dispatch, where Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s Cammie Raleigh answers the call.
“Hold please, patching you through to Los Angeles,” Cammie tells them before getting connected to Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Maddie.
Hen, Athena, and the crew escape the capsule and enter the space station, where they find the astronauts unconscious after being hit by the debris. However, they don’t find peace for long as the station gets another hit, which puts their life at risk again.
9-1-1 is a procedural drama created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear. The series originally premiered on Fox in 2018 and moved to ABC in 2024, starting with Season 7. The series explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders — including police officers, firefighters, and dispatchers — who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking, and heart-stopping situations. The show draws from real-life, high-pressure experiences of first responders who regularly face heart-stopping situations that are often unpredictable, intense and uplifting at the same time.
